The decision follows three days of cancellations due to significant ash
clouds. Dozens of flights were cancelled, with carriers deeming the conditions
too dangerous to fly.

It left many travellers stranded in both Indonesian and Australian airports.
“We sincerely regret any disruption these cancellations have caused and assure
our guests that our team is working diligently to rebook all impacted guests,”
a Virgin Australia spokesperson said.

In Indonesia, the series of deadly eruptions have killed at least nine people
during this month and forced thousands of people to evacuate.
The volcanic status in the country continues to be categorised as “above
normal” by Indonesian authorities. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki – one of the 120
active volcanoes in Indonesia – also remains on a level-four alert, the most
serious warning.
“We appreciate the changing situation is frustrating, and we thank customers
for their understanding and patience,” a Qantas statement said.
Both carriers assured customers they would be contacted to arrange their
updated travel plans.

Unemployment rate holds steady
By Millie Muroi
The unemployment rate has held steady for the third month in a row, with the
economy adding 15,900 jobs last month.
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics today came in broadly in line
with consensus expectations, although the economy added fewer jobs than the
25,000 expected by economists.
It is the smallest increase in jobs added since March this year.
Loading
The number of unemployed people rose by about 8000, but the unemployment rate
remained about 0.6 percentage points above its recent low of 3.5 per cent in
June 2023.
The participation rate – which is the proportion of working-age people
employed or looking for a job – edged down from 67.2 per cent in September to
67.1 per cent in October, driven partly by population growth.
Monthly hours worked rose by about 0.1 per cent in October, in line with the
growth in employment, while the underemployment rate – the proportion of
people working fewer hours than they would like – fell by 0.1 percentage
point.
NSW lost 19,000 jobs and Victoria lost 700 jobs, while Queensland added 38,000
jobs.

Cbus CEO blames third-party administrator for ‘unacceptable’ delays
By Sumeyya Ilanbey
Cbus chief executive Kristian Fok has blamed high staff turnover at the
organisation it had outsourced claims handling to for the significant delays
in dealing with death and disability insurance claims.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is suing Cbus over
allegations the fund failed to identify and prevent delays that affected
10,000 members since August 2022.
Appearing before a Senate inquiry on Thursday morning, Fok apologised to the
10,000 Cbus members – as well as their families – whose claims were delayed,
with the majority of them not resolved for more than a year.

of the Economics References Committee. Credit: AAPIMAGE
“The delays are unacceptable, but we’re not withholding money, absolutely none
at all,” Fok said.
“The delays, as I indicated, have primarily emanated from our administrator.
We are still responsible for it. We need to ensure as best as we can that we
can rectify it, and we have been doing that. We had experience with the
administrator, a large amount of turnover, and need to uplift on training,
there’s been quite a lot of actions we’ve had to instigate.”

Cbus entered into an agreement with the Australian Administration Services in
2020 to handle the insurance claims, according to documents filed in the
Federal Court.
But ASIC noted the fund was ultimately responsible under the law.
Fok told the Senate committee the fund recognised the delays added to the
distress families were experiencing at a difficult time.
“Like many institutions experiencing rapid growth, it has taken time for Cbus
to mature and attract the right personnel to meet our needs,” Fok said.
“Since being appointed as CEO last year, I have, with the strong endorsement
by the board, initiated some significant changes in our leadership and
organisational capabilities in order to address the need to improve the
outcomes that we deliver for our members.”

Free RSV vaccine for babies in NSW
In news from NSW, all infants in the state will be offered free vaccinations
against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the ubiquitous virus responsible
for putting 12,000 babies in hospital annually.
The NSW government’s $16.6 million RSV prevention program will cover the cost
of nirsevimab (Beyfortus), a monoclonal antibody immunisation, for babies
under 12 months from mid-March 2025.
RSV is a significant cause of respiratory illness infecting up to 90 per cent
of children within their first two years and is most severe in under
one-year-olds who can develop bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
Loading
The program complements the federal government’s decision to add free RSV
vaccines for pregnant women to the National Immunisation Program from early
2025, which will also help protect their newborns from the virus.
The Victorian government made the same move in October.
Health Minister Ryan Park said the program will ensure that all infants who
are not protected through maternal vaccination are offered immunisation.
“There is nothing more stressful than having a sick baby, especially when it
is something potentially serious like RSV,” Park said.

Technical gaffe allows Victorian students access to exam questions
By Gemma Grant and Caroline Schelle
To Victoria, where thousands of VCE students had access to official exam
questions because of a technical gaffe made by the Victorian Curriculum and
Assessment Authority (VCAA).
Loading
Students could highlight sections of materials uploaded to the VCAA website,
known as cover pages, which appeared to be blank.
Selecting the document revealed “hidden” text, which could be copied into a
new document and formatted to reveal the additional examination content, as
reported by the Herald Sun .
Cover pages are routinely made available to the public by the VCAA in the
lead-up to exams. The documents are intended to indicate the structure, number
of questions and length of time to complete the assessment – but not the
content.
Read more about the revelation, and the VCAA’s response, here.

Dutton delays decision on tax cut pledge to high-income earners
By Josefine Ganko
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says his highest priority is bringing down
inflation, as he continues stepping back from his promise to legislate further
tax cuts for high-income earners if the Coalition wins government.
During an appearance on ABC’s RN Breakfast on Wednesday, he distanced himself
from the Coalition’s pledge to reinstate further tax cuts for high-income
earners that were scrapped in the changes to stage 3. When asked about those
comments, Dutton repeated that he would confirm his plans after seeing more
budget numbers.
Loading
“The Liberal Party will always be the party of lower taxes and lower interest
rates because we manage the economy more efficiently. I think that’s [a]
really important point to make,” Dutton began.
“Next point is that we have a look at the numbers in a pre-budget context and
decide what it is we can afford for our country. Because the highest priority
at the moment is to bring down inflation.”
Dutton said his decisions on where money is spent in the economy would be
based on reducing inflation to bring interest rates down.
